Along Portland & Western's Toledo District, six grade crossings undergo reconstruction and modernization, including five existing vehicle crossings and one new pedestrian crossing near the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, Oregon.
Need
The one-mile section of track runs at walking-speed conditions due to aging crossings, fouled ballast, and deteriorating infrastructure. Six grade crossings needed reconstruction to bring the corridor into a state of good repair, including replacement of fouled ballast, culverts, and track surfacing. Signal modernization addressed outdated crossing protection at 26th Avenue, while the addition of a new signalized crossing at 13th Avenue and a pedestrian crossing improved safety for the surrounding community.

Impact
The rebuilt crossings and track will give trains a safer, more reliable path through the corridor and provide updated technology to protect drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians at two of its busiest intersections.
