About the Project

The LACMTA G Line (previously Orange Line) is an existing bus route in a dedicated corridor with the highest number of active riders in the San Fernando Valley.  Construction is spread out over an 18-mile section of a highly congested area of Los Angeles and will provide riders with a connection point to the the East San Fernando Light Rail once completed.

Need

Upon completion, this will improve the existing Bus Rapid Transit system by reducing travel times by an average of 29% and allowing for an approximately 39% capacity increase. It will also utilize zero-emission buses (ZEB) to become one of the largest Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) BRT routes in the country.

Work

  • Extensive signaling and design work provided by MRS.
  • Railroad-style four-quadrant gates will be installed at 13 intersections.
  • Improved traffic signal priority at all the other intersections.
  • Three grade separated bridges will be installed.
  • An arial station will be installed over Van Nuys Boulevard.
  • Current Orange Line operations are continuing during construction.
  • Large stormwater capture scope involving pump stations, wells, and mechanical work.

Collaboration

Executed within a Progressive Design-Build, joint-venture framework, the project requires continuous coordination among multiple contractors, subcontractors, and LA Metro. The route runs through six Council Districts, requiring consistent alignment between all parties. Along with the East San Fernando light rail project, this is LA Metro’s first PDB contract.
